Chapter 7

“You know, I don’t think I’ve ever been camping before,” Buddy said as he watched Aldon build a fire. He was once again free of the flex cuffs.

Aldon had set him free so they could all gather some wood for a fire and set up a campsite. Along with the wood, Aldon instructed everyone to find a thin stick about three feet long.

“Dude,” Charlene said as she shook her head, “you were living at a campground.”

“Yeah, but that’s not the same. I was sleeping in my car. That’s less camping and more being homeless.”

“What’s the difference?”

“I don’t know, but it’s different. Feels different. Doing it like this,” Buddy said as he motioned to the total lack of civilization surrounding them and then to the fire, “could be like, fun. Staying at the campground felt like, I don’t know, survival.”

“We’re literally staying up here, so a bunch of machine gun-toting gangsters don’t kill us.”

“Sure, but still.”

Aldon went back into the van and retrieved a couple of packages of hot dogs from the refrigerator.

Margot poked her head into the van. “Hot dogs?”

“I’ve got some MREs if you’d prefer. We could boil some water if you’re not down with roasting hot dogs on a stick over an open flame.”

“I read each hot dog takes like nine minutes off your life.”

“Only if you die of old age and how likely is that for us?”

“I was pretty sure I was going to die today; in fact, I feel like I’m living on borrowed time. Thanks, by the way. You saved my life.”

“Anytime. So, do you want an MRE?”

“I’ve never heard anyone say they were good.”

“Unlike hot dogs roasted over a campfire, which are delicious. Plus, I have mustard.”

“Hard to say no to that. How about buns?”

Aldon shook his head. “They don’t last very long in the van, unlike the hot dogs.”

“Do I want to know how long they’ve been in there?”

“No, you don’t. I did check though and none of them have turned green.”

Aldon exited the van. He set down the hot dogs and pointed to the sticks they’d collected earlier. “If I give you kids knives, can I trust you not to stab us?”

Charlene and Buddy nodded.

“Grab a stick,” Aldon said as he went back into the van. He came back with a pair of pocketknives and handed one to each of them.

“I was figuring on a combat knife or something,” Buddy said as he opened his knife up.

“That’s a genuine Buck knife. It might not be a combat knife, but it’s just as sharp and the perfect size for carving a point on your stick so you can cook a few dogs.”

The pair started carving the sticks to a point.

Aldon handed Margot a double-sided black blade that was a knife built for combat while he used the big combat knife in a sheaf on his belt. It didn’t take anyone long to cut points at the end of their sticks. Aldon used his knife to open the hot dog package and put one on his stick and then passed the package to Margot.
